Este vai ser o meu primeiro natal longe da família de sempre (mas sempre no coração), mas vou ter a meu lado a família de agora. O ideal seria juntar as duas como fizemos no ano passado, mas não pode ser sempre assim. Este ano, vai faltar o bacalhau porque já acabou todo neste fim de semana, por isso vou ter de me contentar com as sobremesas... Feliz mês de Dezembro para todos!
This will be my first Christmas away from family since ever (but always in my heart), but I have by my side my family of today. The ideal would be to join the two as we did last year, but it can not always be like that. This year, the cod will be missingbecause it is over since last weekend, so I'll have to content myself with desserts... Happy December to everyone!

Poetas, santas e marinheiros, uma misturada de super-poderes de mais heróis portugueses...
Luiz Vaz de Camões, não precisou de inventar muito para escrever o Ilíada Portuguesa. Bastou falar sobre grandes heróis e grandes feitos, alguns monstros e muitas vitórias para que a sua obra fosse (ok ok, algum tempo após a sua morte) valorizada. Com a pena numa mão, espada na outra e com um olho tapado, cuidado cuidado, que ele não é para brincadeiras...
A santa que se segue é de Portugal (pois claro é que santas há muitas). Casou-se com D. Diniz que um dia lhe perguntou o que escondia no vestido. São rosas senhor! disse ela, sabendo que eram pães que ela ia dar aos pobres. Em Janeiro? perguntou o rei, insistindo para ver. E os pães tornaram-se rosas...
Por fim temos o senhor Vasco da Gama que, depois de saber que o Cabo das Tormentas era afinal um Cabo da Boa Esperança, lá ganhou toda a coragem para chegar ao outro lado do Mundo, a tão desejada Índia das especiarias. Cumpriu um sonho com 80 anos de vida...

With a pen in one hand, a sword in the other and with one eye covered, take care, he is not to be underestimated...
The next one on the list is a saint from Portugal (sure, because the world is full of holy people). She married with D. Diniz, who one day asked her what was she hiding in her dress. Roses my lord! she said, knowing that she was going to give bread to the poor. In January? asked the king, insisting to see . And the bread became roses...
Finally we have Mr. Vasco da Gama who, after learning that the Cape of Storms was one after the Cape of Good Hope, he won all the courage to reach the other side of the world, the so desired India of the spices . He fulfilled a dream with 80 years of life...

Apresento-vos Afonso de Albuquerque, o Leão dos Mares, governador da Índia portuguesa e criador do mare clausum português. Os seus feitos heróicos e militares no outro lado do mundo apenas podem ser comparáveis a Alexandre o Grande, que apesar de ser grande não era português :)
Fernão de Magalhães ficou conhecido por querer dar a volta ao mundo de barco. Foi preciso muita coragem porque naquele tempo, andar de barco sem GPS não era nada fácil. A viagem durou 3 anos, mas Fernão ficou pelo caminho...
E no fim da lista temos o Pedro Álvares Cabral. Diz-se que descobriu o Brasil quando se dirigia para a Índia... Mau navegador, sortudo ou um herói muito inteligente que já sabia que o Brasil irmão andava por essas partes do mundo? De histórias percebes tu, oh Pedrinho!

Um destes desenhos deve ter sido o primeiro a ser feito quando cheguei a Istanbul. No início ainda tinha medo de usar a tinta e agora que volto a olhar, talvez ainda tenha um bocadinho :). Mas uma coisa é certa, hoje arrisco mais do que ontem e com certeza que amanhã vou arriscar ainda mais. E o resultado não podia ser melhor, mais cor, mais riscos, mais tentativas e erros mas também mais vitórias. E é assim que tem de ser. Força!
One of these drawings must have been the first to be done when I arrived in Istanbul. Earlier I was still afraid to use the inks and now I look again, maybe even have a little bit :). But one thing is certain, today I take the chance more than yesterday and that tomorrow will surely risk further. And the result could not be better, more color, more lines, more trials and errors but also more victories. And that's how it must be. Força!

Esta é a minha parede lá de casa. Tem algumas molduras que eram para ser preenchidas com ilustrações minhas... Mas, como apenas uma ou outra coube a muito custo, tenho a maior parte das molduras vazias, à espera de ilustrações que as preencham... Para a próxima compro as molduras primeiro :)
This is my wall back home. It has some frames that were suppoosed to be filled with my illustrations... But only one or two illustrations could fit in some frames very hardly and now I have many empty frames, waiting for the illustrations to fill them... Next time I will buy the frames first :)

Esta história fala de um avô que era doce como o mel. É verdade que tinha abelhas e produzia mel em casa, mas não era apenas isso que o fazia mais doce. a sua doçura vinha da sua maneira de ser, da sua forma como falava com os animais, como tratava das árvores de fruto e como era paciente com as pessoas, mesmo aquelas mais chatinhas :). Foi a minha primeira tentativa de fazer uma espécie de livro, mas no fundo, a intenção era perpetuar esta personagem que sempre nos fez sorrir. e agora, uma chá com mel (sim, mel do meu avô)...
This story talks about a grandfather who was sweet as honey. It is true that had bees and produced honey at home, but this was notthe only thing that made him sweeter. its sweetness came from his personality, his way of talking to the animals, his dedication taking care of the fruit trees and his patience with people, even the most anoying ones:). It was my first attempt to make a kind of book, but at the end, the intention was to perpetuate this character who always made us smile. and now, I'll have a tea with honey (yes, honey of my grandfather) ...

D. João II, o príncipe Perfeito, continuando o trabalho do seu tio avô infante D. Henrique, lançou barcos de papel para o mar, após assinar o tratado de Tordesilhas, pois sabia que os sonhos existem para lá das fronteiras...
D. Manuel I veio pouco mais tarde e viu os sonhos do João tornarem-se realidade. Com a ajuda de alguns amigos que andavam a descobrir o mar, viu o mundo na palma da sua mão...
E no fim desta história temos o D. Pedro I, o Romeu português, que amava uma Inês. Mas como não estamos aqui para contar histórias tristes, basta-nos dizer que gostava da tal Inês nem que a morte os tentasse separar...
E na próxima vez há mais...
D. Manuel I veio pouco mais tarde e viu os sonhos do João tornarem-se realidade. Com a ajuda de alguns amigos que andavam a descobrir o mar, viu o mundo na palma da sua mão...

Esta série de ilustrações junta os meus primeiros super heróis. Estão pensadas 18 ilustrações, mas claro que haverão mais aventuras para contar.
Começo por D. Afonso Henriques, o primeiro rei de Portugal e um homem baixinho mas de barba rija que foi por portugal abaixo quase de uma assentada para reconquistar as terras cristãs!
Depois temos D. Diniz, que fez tudo quanto quis, que gostava de trovas, literatura e ciências, mas também de plantar árvores em Leiria num pinhal mandado construir por outros reis.
E por fim temos D. João I, o primeiro da dinastia de Avis, amigo de Nuno Álvares Pereira e pai da ínclita gerão, conquistou Ceuta, iniciando a expansão marítima portuguesa.
A história de portugal, por terra ou mar, tem aqui um pequeno espaço para homenagear os heróis de tempos antigos. Oxalá os reis e descobridores de hoje fossem valentes assim...

Starting by D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, a short man but with a hard beard that went all the way down in Portugal in almost one stroke to regain the Christian lands!
Then we have D. Diniz, who did all he wanted, who liked trovas, literature and science, but also liked to plant trees in a pine forest in Leiria built by other kings.
And finally we have D. John I, the first of Avis dynasty, friend Nuno Alvares Pereira and father of the illustrious generation, conquered Ceuta, initiating the Portuguese maritime expansion.

Uma parede branca e umas saudades imensas de um S. João à moda antiga. Tenho saudades de martelar a torto e a direito (especialmente aos carecas :P), comer sardinhas na rua, levar com alho-porro nas ventas, ouvir as músicas, ver os arraiais e o fogo de artifício, sentir o Porto em festa, lançar os balões de papel pela noite de S. João a dentro... Fica aqui uma ilustração muito pequenina e muito humilde, mas para o ano também há S. João...
A white wall and a huge miss of an old fashioned S. João festival. I miss hammering all around me, boys and girls, young and old (but especially the bald :P), eating sardines on the street, take leeks in my face, listen to music, watch the fireworks and the dances, feel Porto partying, and launch paper balloons in the night of S. João... I leave you here a tiny and very humble illustration, but there's also S. João in the next year...

E depois da despedida de solteira, aqui estão os cartões para os convidados escreverem os seus votos de felicidades. É claro que toda a gente escreveu atrás do cartão, em vez de escrever no espaço feito de propósito na ilustração (deve ter sido para não estragar :D)...
And after the bachelorette party, here it is the cards where the guest will write their best wishs to the couple. Of course, everybody wrote behing the card, instead of writting in the space made on purpose in the illustration (maybe not to ruin it :D)...

Desta vez foi a sério. É a segunda parede que pinto mas desta vez perdi o medo de usar as tuntas e o máximo de parede possível. E o resultado está à vista. São pedaços de muitas terras às quais associo muitos amigos e muitas memórias. É portanto, um bocadinho de muitos pedaços de Portugal, aqui em Istambul...
This time was for real. This is the second wall that I paint but this time i was not afraid to use the inks and as much wall I could paint. And the result is here. It's pieces of many places link to many friends and memories. So, I Can say this illustration is a little of many pieces of Portugal here in Istanbul...

Neste momento em que estou cheio de trabalho, tirei 5 minutos do meu tempo para pegar num pedaço de cartão, numa caneta e recordar todos os soldados da paz que perderam as suas vidas a proteger as vidas dos outros... É pouco, muito pouco, eu sei, mas estão todos na nossa mente. Este ano, o número excedeu os limites e este desenho é apenas uma árvore numa floresta de pessoas que vos agradecem por tudo o que têm feito...
At this moment I am full of work, but I took 5 minutes of my time to pick up a piece of cardboard, a pen and remember all peacekeepers who lost their lives to protect the lives of others... It is very, very little I know, but you are all in our mind. This year, the number exceeded the limits and this drawing is only one tree in a forest of people who thank you for everything you have done...

O que acham deste pequeno esquisso para a parede cá de casa? Esta vai ser a minha primeira ilustração numa parede com dimensões razoáveis. Sei que vai ficar bem mas tenho sempre aquele medo porque afinal de contas, uma parede não é um papel. Seja como for, vai ser uma pena não poder levar a parede às costas...
What do you think of this little sketch that I'll make in the wall of our home? This will be my first illustration on a wall with reasonable dimensions. I know it will be fine but I always have that fear because after all, a wall is not a paper. Anyway, it will be a pity not to be able to take the illustration away with me...

Hoje não é dia da mulher mas podia muito bem ser. Aliás, esta ilustração foi tirada do fundo da gaveta, por isso é possível que tenha sido feita em março do ano passado. Chama-se Maria Mulher!
